Setting up his "Martin Luther: Here I stand …" sculptural installation in Wittenberg's historic market square in the summer of 2010, Ottmar Hörl opened the Luther Decade. Unlike any other work of art so far, eight hundred Luther multiples have stimulated and animated a discussion on art, aesthetics and freedom. Since then, Hörl's Luther sculptures have conquered the whole world starting from Wittenberg, inviting people to engage in a cultural discourse.
A number of Luther multiples will be stopping over at the Veste Coburg fortress between 3 and 7 June so as to make Luther more visible there.
Background information on the World Heritage Day:
At the initiative of the German Commission for UNESCO and the German UNESCO World Heritage Sites Association (UNESCO-Welterbestätten Deutschland e.V.), the first UNESCO World Heritage Day was held on 5 June 2005. Since then, is has been celebrated each year on the first Sunday of June. The aim of the World Heritage Day is to raise public awareness of German World Heritage sites not only as places of particularly careful conservation work, but also as important mediators of the UNESCO concept. Hence, central themes of the World Heritage Day continue to be encounters and a cultural dialogue.
For the first time, there will also be events in Coburg associated with the World Heritage Day, intended to point out that Veste Coburg is participating in the nomination process to extend the Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg World Heritage site so as to include more Luther Memorials in Central Germany. Eighteen Luther memorial sites in Wittenberg, Eisleben, Mansfeld, Torgau, Erfurt and Coburg have joined forces in preparing the nomination. UNESCO's decision is expected to be announced in the summer of 2017.*
